School

The Place I Find Myself Most Often

Double Major: Psychology & Business.

Living on campus definitely has it’s ups and downs. When I was a kid, I would have thought living at school would have been dreadful. As it is, we are already trapped inside and coerced to do work for hours on end in the first place, why would anyone want to live in such a place? But college is a little less prison-like than how I imagined it years ago. As a matter of fact, I actually like this place!

My classes for the 2014 spring semester include;

Business Law

Public Speaking

Microeconomics

Research Methods of Psychology

Project Design

Business law is surprisingly paradoxical. I have never taken a class that is both as interesting and as boring as this one. Everyday it is different, sometimes I hate it, while other times I really enjoy it and am able to apply material learned in class to real life.

Everyone I know was surprised when they heard that I had signed up for Public Speaking. I am rather quiet, and some would even say shy. I signed up for this class because I think public speaking is a good skill to have, and I wanted to improve my own ability. It also happens to be required for one of my majors, so I suppose it is not all that shocking after all.

Microeconomics is- well, microeconomics. Not much can be said about the class except that the professor seems to take what would be a rather dull subject and spices it up with some of his own flavor.

Research Methods of Psychology is by far my worst class this semester. When I imagined myself in college, I pictured myself only taking classes that interested me. Well unfortunately, this class is boring and I have little interest in how psychologists collect their data beyond the basic understandings. I know I am a Psych major, but I am not interested in collecting data or research. I like to know why people like to think the ways they do- which cannot be done without research of course, but the research aspect is simply not for me.

The final class that I am taking this semester is Project Designs, and it is so far my favorite. Not being a New Media student, I feel very fortunate to be in this class. I like this class because we have the opportunity to create. Something that I love doing, and unfortunately haven’t done in a while. Unlike most classes, where I go in and get talked at only to later be quizzed on, this class lets us take what we know and what we are good at and turn it into a reality. With the resources we have access to at UMaine, a long with the experience and help from professors, and a class that provides structure and adds a sense of urgency, I think nothing less than great things will be achieved.

I am a hardworking second year black bear majoring in Psychology and Business. I have a 3.46 cumulative GPA and hope to someday start my own business.
